First Snow of the Season for the Cascades

Timberline Lodge Snow Stake Cam, 5,900'

FINALLY! It’s one thing to be overjoyed at the first stormy forecast of autumn, but to actually see the moderate rain, gusty winds, and even the mountain snow associated with it is nothing short of wonderful. And believe it or not, another storm is right on its heels! Let’s just cut to the chase and […]

Fall Arrives Next Monday

I hope you can forgive me for the click-baity, questionably accurate title. From an astronomical perspective, autumn will begin on 1:02 pm PDT Friday, September 22, 2017, and meteorological fall officially began on September 1st. But after a record-smashing streak of drier and hotter-than-average weather, we’ll finally get our first true taste of autumn next […]

Dry Streaks End Tonight!

GOES-16 Low-level Water Vapor showing a strong front coming into the Pacific Northwest.

FINALLY! After 56 days of no measurable precipitation for Seattle and 57 for Portland, both streaks will end tonight as a relatively strong front moves through the area. The front is associated with an upper-level trough/associated ~995 hPa surface low currently centered near Haida Gwaii. The water vapor imagery below looks more reminiscent of a […]

As I’ve mentioned in some of my previous posts, this has been an exceptionally stormy winter for much of California. While these storms have been crucial in eliminating California’s drought, they have also caused a variety of weather-related hazards in the Golden State. And no hazard has been bigger than the crisis on Northern California’s […]

Ahh… Much Calmer Weather On The Way

After dealing with lowland snow Sunday/Monday, heavy rain Wednesday/Thursday, and a minor windstorm today, Pacific Northwesterners will finally get a much-deserved respite from the wacky weather we’ve witnessed recently. Today’s winds were caused by a degrading 999 mb cyclone making landfall on the Olympic Peninsula. As is typical, the strongest gusts were in the mountains, […]

Freezing Rain, Flooding, and Avalanches – Oh My!

I apologize for not posting as much as I would like recently! I’ve been very busy tweaking the site and preparing for WeatherTogether’s booth at WeatherFest, which is part of the American Meteorological Society’s (AMS) annual conference. As luck would have it, the AMS conference is in Seattle this winter, so it definitely made sense […]

Warm, Wet, and Windy Weather Next Week

A major pattern change is in store for us next week. After dealing with very cold temperatures and heaps of snow for those lucky folks in Portland, we will see temperatures in the 50s, snow levels above 7000 feet, and very heavy rain as an atmospheric river plows through the Pacific Northwest. There is still […]

Warmer and Wetter Weather On The Way

After two weeks of subfreezing temperatures, snowfall, and even sleet and freezing rain for folks living in Bellingham and near the Columbia River Gorge, a major pattern change towards warmer and wetter weather is in store for us. Although I like the cold (and LOVE the snow that sometimes comes with it), I’m excited to transition back to a much more active pattern that promises to bring gobs of snow to the mountains, heavy rain to the lowlands, and blustery winds just about everywhere.

Stormy Thanksgiving on Tap

Thanksgiving Week is, on average, the stormiest week of the year for the Pacific Northwest. And luckily for storm geeks and snow lovers across our region, Turkey Day 2016 will live up to its stormy reputation as a cyclone bringing strong winds, heavy rain, and heaps of mountain snow slams into the Pacific Northwest. That’s […]

An Extremely Stormy Week On Tap!

Hi everybody! Sorry for the delay in posts. I would have gotten more done if it weren’t for the recent revelations regarding Donald Trump. By the way, Donald Trump would be an absolute disaster for our country for many reasons, but one of them is his refusal to do anything about global warming. Though I […]
